Lorraine Thomas -- Project Manager, Business Plan Development

Communication specialist, Lorraine Thomas, has been contracted to develop a comprehensive business plan for the NBDC. Ms. Thomas’s background includes working in both the non-profit and private sector in communications for the past 20 years. Her most recent work as Communications Director with Nortext included the development of communication plans, web sites, data base development and research into commercial applications on the Internet. She is also the former chair of Nuluaq, an Iqaluit public Internet access site.

In the mid-90’s, Ms. Thomas worked with the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation to launch Connecting the North, a pan-Arctic symposium looking at community requirements for accessing the information highway. Information resulting from this consultation was instrumental in demonstrating the need for broadband in Nunavut.

Ms. Thomas began her work in communications in the arctic in 1987 in Nain, Labrador, where she taught television production for the OKalaKatiget Society and then in Rankin Inlet for the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, both aboriginal broadcasters serving Inuit. From 1989-1991, she developed the video production company, Inuit Communications Systems Limited (ICSL), whose profits are invested in IBC. She also worked as Acting Executive Director for IBC in 1994.

Ms. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson (1984), and a BA in Communications from Carleton University, (1993).

Ms. Thomas has been living and working in Iqaluit since 1998.
